These fears, those tears
Not from pain oh no
Of biting teeth or rending claw?
Not fear of sword or fiery end no more
But agony of mind in darkness
Alone beside a lonely pool.
My life as cool still water
And so I am chameleon. We are.
We have to be.
Oh no! You didn’t see me change?
To suit your mood, your life. Your pain?
You never will.
Because then you’d know I can
You’d know!!
And start to understand this cold heart
And that is my strength. My defence
Against the cruelty of truth
I see it in you open face
And oh yes. I change.
I am chameleon.
You will catch a glimpse. Now and then.
A shadow from a cloud across the sun.
But as you notice?…. Gone
Passed by. Forgotten again
A hint of my pain.
Don’t look too closely into these eyes
My soul is not there
It lived there once … many moons ago
But now? Just your reflection and a smile
My smile, so kind so caring
But beware… I am chameleon.
I allow you only to see
What I want you to see
Maybe just a mirror of yourself
And rarely my other being
The other side of the moon
The dark half that few have seen
Always turned away in darkness
None see … but me.
