Thought I’d share a few pics taken last week in Highbanks Metro Park Columbus Ohio. We bumped into this guy on one of our walks. My baby tells me that Woody Woodpecker is based on this Pileated Woodpecker. He was certainly noisy. Quite a big bird too. Click here for more info on this guy.
Thought I’d just check the facts on the Woody Woodpecker factoid and it’s true. Although originally inspired by an Acorn Woodpecker he acquired the traits of the Pileated Woodpecker as he developed. Check out the story here.
This one was a male. He has a red cheek stripe and the female has a black patch at the front of her head.
Great bird.
Noisy lil thing too.
