This truly is about feeling hopeless and wandering through life without direction. It is about taking comfort and companionship where you can find it if only for a night. This could be a Matt Spears poem but I think he would not be quite so cynical. The woman in this piece has popped up in several of my poems but she is not based on a real person but rather she is a mirror image of the man, myself even in some ways. Maybe this is just a ‘ships in the night’ poem.
Walking into that room.
Dark…. and music playing, he sees her
Just eye contact as they acknowledge kindred souls
He nods, she smiles and flicks ash
Unsaid words as he looks around
Late party scene
He has nothing to offer
She has nothing to give.
Maybe they have both seen it before
Sweaty bed, party promises
Shedding clothes for something
And he moves closer
Not knowing he does
And swigs cheap beer
Both looking for unattainable dreams
Comfort and painless
But knowing it don’t happen
She crosses nylon clad knees
He draws on his cigarette
And although they are so far apart
Unspoken words cross intimate space.
He smiles at her in her party dress.
But he has so little to give
She wants so little to take.
Sitting down beside her and asking names
But it really doesn’t matter
Who cares anyway
Will have been forgotten in the morning
And the grand act follows as they smile
It doesn’t matter
More pain on pain
It doesn’t matter
And they talk….early hours
About their sad lives
About pain and loss
As cigarette smoke forms layers
And in just one small tiny moment they
Find joy in mutual adversity
And they smile
Knowing that they are the same.
And music plays….delta blues as he asks her to dance
Just for one moment
A small place in time they are together
He strokes her cheek as she looks up into his eyes
As blues play and closeness wipes out
She smells the cheap beer on his breath
He smells cheap perfume
And for one short sorrowful ….
They are in love
With being in love
He runs fingers up her back and she shivers
In a dark room
Of no love
Of unkindness and sad moments
But it doesn’t matter
And they kiss….slowly….deeply.
Knowing this won’t happen
Because it can’t
The rules say that
And parting comes as
Another day’s sad dawn
Shows itself outside closed curtains
Parting……knowing they won’t meet again
And he walks home alone
Thinking what could have been
She walks home thinking what was………
