Me and my Raven had a great weekend but the highlight was staying at Landoll’s Mohican Castle. Raven’s sister had recommended it to us but we hadn’t actually planned to visit there last weekend. We actually visited the Great Mohican Pow Wow which is in the same area. The Mohican State Park is a beautiful part of Ohio containing lots of wild forests, streams and rivers. Plenty of wildlife too. We saw wild turkeys, deer and lots of birds.
After we left the Pow Wow we drove about until Raven spotted a sign to the Castle and so we thought we’d take a look. It is about 5 miles from Loudonville and in a very rural area, nothing much else there but the castle. It would be a bit of a dodgy drive if the roads were icy. But first impressions are often everything and this place certainly made a great one. We decided we had to stay and managed to get a suite (the Ross Suite). The room was spectacular almost as you’d imagine a castle bedroom to look like. High beamed ceilings, lots of wood and brass, which is all local and apparently obtained from local fallen trees (not the brass obviously lol). The place is positively medieval with gorgeous rugs and furniture but the fittings are definitely modern. Our suite boasted a whirlpool tub, double shower, microwave, fridge etc etc. The bed was a huge King Sized wooden one with lovely bed coverings.
We visited the Stepping Stone restaurant at the Castle which was rather pleasant. Not a great choice of meals but adequate. I had Chicken pasta Alfredo which was very nice but my only disappointment was not being able to get a beer or wine to go with it. This is Ohio and they couldn’t sell booze on a Sunday. They did a great New York Cheesecake too which we took out and had in our suite later … yummy. The hotel does have an indoor pool and hot tub which we used but the pool room did seem to need a little refurbishment but it again was adequate.
We returned to our suite after dinner where luckily I had a beer that we had bought with us. I eventually sussed out how to use the Direct TV and we settled down for a while. About 11:30pm Raven suggested we explore the outside by moonlight (I must admit she had to wake me as I had dozed off due to the beer, a full belly and the comfortable bed) but it was beautiful. As I said this is a very rural area, no big roads nearby and the silence of the grounds and woods was amazing. The moon shone through the trees, the stars were bright in the sky and the tree frogs were singing. It was very dark and maybe we should have brought a torch but I think that would have spoiled it. Lots of rustlings in the undergrowth and the calls of night birds.
We had a great night’s sleep and awoke in time for breakfast which very sensibly is from 9am-11am. I hate rushing to get up early just to get breakfast. We made use of the waffle iron (great invention – we plan to get one…lol) and after taking more photo’s on a beautiful sunny morning we were off again to explore more of the area. Highly recommended. Enjoy the pictures.
