Because it’s the 8th, NaPoWriMo thought we might try writing in ottava rima — an Italian form that, in English, usually takes the form of an eight-line stanza of iambic pentameter, with a rhyme scheme of a-b-a-b-a-b-c-c. The most famous poem in English that uses the ottava rima form is probably Byron’s Don Juan. And so here is my attempt for today. Using strict rhyming is not something I usually do and so this was a bit of a challenge although fun.
ALONE
She entered the room: it was cold, bereft
No sign of him there? Just a lingering scent
Unnaturally quiet. She knew he had left.
The threats to go he had obviously meant
The tears came unbidden, first many, then less
Her love had been given, but lost as he went
She had won and then lost; and now came the pain
No such fortune, no new chance to love him again.
